It is important that your car is fitted with the right type and size of tyre and be suitable for the purpose the vehicle is being used.
To comply with UK law, your tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central ¾ width of the tyre and around the entire circumference – and there must not be any cuts or bulges.
For safety reasons it is recommended that you replace your tyres before this legal limit is reached. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing your tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm. Did you know that if you are driving with illegal tyres you may receive three penalty points and a £2,500 fine per tyre?
It is also a legal requirement to ensure that tyres of different construction types are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle. The two main tyre types are radial and cross-ply. Mixing different brands and patterns is usually permissible if the tyres are of the same construction type, but this depends on the vehicle type and manufacturer’s recommendation.
